OAS clawback (OAS recovery tax)

Also called: OAS recovery tax, OAS pension recovery tax, OAS clawback threshold

The OAS clawback is a repayment of 15% of your net income above a yearly threshold, taken out of your Old Age Security; the threshold for 2025 income is C$93,454.

For every dollar of net world income above the threshold, you repay 15 cents of OAS, until the whole pension is gone. On 2025 income, the full pension is recovered at C$152,062 for ages 65 to 74 and C$157,923 for 75 and over. The repayment is deducted from monthly OAS payments from July 2026 to June 2027.

The threshold rises with inflation. The government lists C$95,323 for 2026 income, which sets deductions from July 2027 to June 2028.

Because the test is net income, RRIF withdrawals, pension income and investment income all count, while TFSA withdrawals don't. Deciding when to draw down an RRSP, whether to defer OAS and how to split income with a spouse are common ways planners keep a client under the threshold.

How to check

Any OAS you repaid for a year appears on line 23500 (social benefits repayment) of your tax return and on your notice of assessment.
