Asset location

Also called: tax location, tax-efficient placement

Asset location is choosing which investments to hold in taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts so the same overall portfolio produces less tax.

It is different from asset allocation, which decides how much goes into stocks, bonds, and cash. Location takes that mix as given and places each piece in the account where it is taxed least.

A common pattern: bonds and other holdings that pay interest taxed as ordinary income go in traditional IRAs and 401(k)s; the holdings expected to grow most go in Roth accounts, where growth is never taxed; broad stock index funds go in taxable accounts, where qualified dividends and long-term gains get lower rates and losses can be harvested.

The benefit depends on your tax brackets and how much you hold in each type of account. It also means each account looks different on its own, which is expected: judge the household portfolio as a whole.

How to check

Ask an advisor whether they manage location across all your accounts, including a 401(k) they don't control, and how they rebalance without selling in the taxable account.
