# Dealing representative

> A dealing representative is a person registered in Canada to buy and sell securities for clients on behalf of a dealer firm, such as a mutual fund dealer or an investment dealer.

Many people with a financial advisor title at banks and fund companies are registered in this category. A dealing representative at a mutual fund dealer works mainly with mutual funds; one at an investment dealer can trade a wider range, including stocks, bonds and ETFs.

Dealing representatives are usually paid through commissions, trailer fees or an asset-based fee set by their firm, and must follow the Client Focused Reforms when they recommend investments. It's a different category from an advising representative, who works for a portfolio manager and can manage your money with discretion, meaning without asking you to approve each trade.

The category describes what someone may do with securities. It says nothing about planning credentials such as the CFP or QAFP, so check those separately.

## How to check

The CSA's National Registration Search shows each person's registration category, their firm and the provinces they're registered in. A dealing representative acts on behalf of that dealer firm.
