# Chartered Investment Manager (CIM)

> The CIM is a Canadian designation from the Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) for advisors trained in discretionary portfolio management, where the manager makes investment decisions on the client's behalf.

Also called: CIM

Candidates complete one of CSI's approved education paths, have two years of relevant investment experience within the last five, verified by an employer or supervisor, and commit to the CIM Code of Ethics.

To keep it, holders renew every year, pay an annual licence fee, re-commit to the Code of Ethics, and complete 20 hours of professional development plus 10 hours of compliance education over each two-year cycle.

The CIM pathway is one of the routes to registration as a portfolio manager or associate portfolio manager under CIRO rules, but the designation is not the registration. Someone can hold the CIM without being registered to manage your money, and the CIM says nothing about how they are paid.

In the public graph, 23 of the 24,501 fee-only advisors list the CIM.

## How to check

Search CSI's directory of CIM holders on csi.ca. Then confirm the person's registration category with the Canadian Securities Administrators' National Registration Search.
